If we do not take your insurance, we still want to help make it as easy as possible to deal with insurance and payment. To do this, when possible we offer "courtesy billing" in which we will submit the claim for you, so that we are dealing with the insurance, and you only pay the difference. If we cannot submit your out of network bill to your insurance company, we will provide you with a superbill to submit on your own.
Couples Therapy
For couples and family therapy, we provide services as direct pay only. We do not take any insurance for couples or family work, and do not provide a superbill (specialized receipt for insurance); sessions are not submittable to insurance.
Why is Couples Therapy not covered by insurance?
Your insurance may state that they cover family therapy. There are specific criteria of what constitutes this: One family member (spouse/partner/child/etc) is diagnosed with a mental illness. The parent/spouse/partner is brought into some (not all) of the person's sessions, ONLY to focus on what they can do to support their family member in their mental health recovery. For example, reminding the person to use coping skills, helping provide them with transportation to appointments, helping remind them to take their medications, etc. It absolutely does not include working on couples therapy issues, such as infidelity, communication issues, disagreements about finances, differences in parenting opinions/practices, intimacy issues/concerns, etc.
However couples therapy is NOT in this category, and not covered by insurance. Insurance does not consider communication issues between couples, infidelity, disagreements about finances or parenting, intimacy concerns, etc. to constitute a mental illness or medical necessity. They also do not permit a couple (group unit) to be diagnosed with a shared mental illness. Couples therapy focuses on very separate issues than family therapy does, and it requires specialized training and interventions.
More about how insurance works
Some of our providers are able to accept different insurance plans than others, but everyone at Stone Soup Counseling is in-network with CareFirst and Johns Hopkins plans.
In-network providers have been approved by your insurance company and would be covered by your insurance plan as dictated by your particular benefits.
Every insurance plan is different; the cost to you per appointment depends on what your particular insurance offers and we cannot determine this without checking your specific benefits. Even if your insurance is through the same company as another client, you might see a different cost based on different plan benefits.
If we are not in-network with your insurance, you may still have out-of-network coverage. This means that your insurance company does not consider us a preferred provider but may, in some cases, still offer some degree of coverage for appointments.
If you are using insurance, we will bill your insurance company directly and you would pay the difference. We cannot charge you a different amount than indicated by your insurance. We will let you know the amount once we have checked your benefits, in advance of your first appointment.
Some helpful insurance terms to understand:
Deductible - This is the total amount you would need to pay in medical costs before your insurance plan begins to cover a particular type of care.
Copay - This is a set amount that you would pay per appointment, for a particular type of care. This could be different for a visit to your primary care physician than it is for mental health appointments. A deductible could apply.
Co-insurance - In this case, your insurance company covers a percentage of the cost and you are available for the remainder -- example: they pay 80% and you pay 20%. A deductible could apply.
Out-of-pocket (OOP) maximum - If you reach this total, either through copays or co-insurance, your insurance company will cover your total costs for the remainder of year. This could be a calendar year, or could be set specifically by insurance enrollment periods for your plan.
